Our latest selection is a wonderfully written piece by Wicked Enough entitled:
Shattered Minds --
'Of course I can't love you,' he hissed into the dark. 'I am the Avenger. I'm using you because you're a whore and a spy. I promised I would give you freedom... Nothing else.'
How did you choose the setting of the story? Shattered Minds originally came into life because I wanted Sakura to be a high class spy. However, I also wanted her to be in a position where her actions and acting would be plausible. When I decided to make her into a geisha, the setting came into mind--a bizarre mix of Pre-Meiji Japan and the original Naruto fandom. How did you choose your characters and their names? Since it's fanfiction, the characters and their names were already chosen. The hard part was putting each character into their particular roles so that they made sense. Obviously there were our main protagonists, Sasuke and Sakura, and our main antagonist, Itachi, but then there are the supporting characters, in particular, Tenten, Neji, Ino, Hinata, Naruto, and Orochimaru, most of whom fitted into the story by sheer luck, the most predominant being Hinata, who wasn't even supposed to reappear in the story after the first chapter. What inspired the plot? At first it was just the idea of kunoichi and their missions, and the forms they took to complete them. However, the idea of Sakura and Sasuke working against each other seemed too cliche, so I made Sakura into a bit of the victim, then allowed her to grow within the situation. Sasuke's plan of revenge, his main plot point in the original series, couldn't have been better for the situation. Itachi turned out to be the perfect villain, and his infamous speech to Sasuke after the Uchiha Massacre, along with his Sharingan, made the plot completely obvious to me. The characters themselves became the inspiration for the plot--the situations that shaped them in the original series were easy to transfer onto a fresh universe. Any helpful suggestions to other writers? In the case of fanfiction, the main piece of advice I have to give is to simply use the characters as they are in the series and work with them to create something new. There's so many situations you can put them in without having to resort to the notorious high-school or love/hate-esque relationship AUs. Also, it doesn't hurt to have written three or four chapters before posting. That way, you'll have more time to plan out future chapters without the pressure of reviews pushing you to just update. And, though I'll probably get shot by readers for this, authors should understand that they should only write when they are inspired to do so. It's obvious when writing is forced--it's of lower quality and the characters seem fake. It's better to have a brilliantly written chapter a month late than it is to have a typo-filled, awkward chapter on time.

So, true! It's like you're just forced to write for the sake of writing for the readers. Hahaha.. ^^v
